REGIONAL MEETING OF THE CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS IN CENTRAL ASIA

On the occasion of the Human Rights Day, which is celebrated on 1 December every year, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights' (OHCHR) together with the European Union organized the Regional meeting of the civil society organizations in Central Asia.

The event took place with live coverage parallelly from Ashgabat, Osh, Dushanbe, Tashkent and brought together the representatives of the EU Missions in the Central Asia countries, OHCHR, public organizations of countries, experts in the field of human rights, youth.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, Special representative of the European Union in the Central Asia Terhi Hakala, Christian Jorge Salazar Volkmann Director, Field Missions and Technical Cooperation Department of OHCHR addressed to the meeting participants via video communication.

The key addressed topics during the meeting - regional trends in the field of equality, contemporary challenges, regional cooperation in this area, in particular, the development of a regional strategy in the field of human rights, empowerment of young people with disabilities in Central Asian countries.

In this regard, the Chairman of the public organization “Yenme” in Turkmenistan Gulya Chorekliyeva talked about the professional realization off the disabled persons on Turkmenistan.

The human rights philosophy is based on one main value. And this value is a person, - she said.

In her speech Renata Wrobel, Deputy Chief of UN Mission in Turkmenistan, stated that human rights are an important aspect of bilateral relations between the EU and Turkmenistan. The EU has consistently supported the Government of Turkmenistan in implementing national human rights laws and international conventions, in bringing the Ombudsman's office in line with the Paris Principles and expanding its scope.

It is important to note, that the Second National Action Plan for Gender Equality (NAPGE 2) along with the current legislation complies with the international standards and provides a sound basis for the promoting women's rights in Turkmenistan.

UN human rights mechanisms and bodies strive to improve the realization of human rights in all countries of the world. Experience shows that the interaction of civil society with human rights mechanisms gives more successful results, especially if such interaction occurs at all stages of the cycle of work of a particular mechanism.
