Turkmenistan and UN Tourism strengthen cooperation in the field of sustainable tourism

On 15 April 2026, a meeting was held between Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Myahri Bashimova and Regional Director ad interim for Europe of UN Tourism Cordula Wohlmuther.

At the beginning of the meeting, M.Byashimova expressed gratitude for the participation of the UN Tourism delegation in the International Exhibition and Conference TurkmenTravel - 2026, held in Ashgabat on 14-16 April this year.

During the talks, the sides considered current issues of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UN Tourism.

The interlocutors discussed the implementation of previously reached agreements, including the promotion of Turkmenistan's tourism potential, development of infrastructure, training of specialized personnel, and other areas.

Special attention was paid to the prospects for cooperation within the framework of the UN-Turkmenistan Cooperation Framework for 2026-2030.

The Turkmen side welcomed the proclamation of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism – 2027, as well as the launch in January 2026 of the corresponding Roadmap for its implementation.

Among the promising areas of cooperation identified were digitalization and innovation, investment attraction, creation of new jobs, increasing the resilience of the tourism sector, as well as preservation of cultural and natural heritage.

The parties also discussed practical aspects of cooperation, including the holding on 15 April 2026 of a specialized UN Tourism training on tourism management for students and national specialists.

Turkmenistan's readiness for more active participation in the elective structures of UN Tourism was confirmed, and issues related to the participation of the Turkmen delegation in the 72nd session of the organization's European Regional Commission, were also considered.
