INTER-UNIVERSITY COOPERATION ON LANGUAGE TEACHING

The Turkmen capital is currently hosting inter-university events to mark 25 years of Turkmenistan’s neutrality and the 3rd anniversary since the adoption of the Strategy for Improving Foreign Language Teaching.

Almost all of the capital’s higher education institutions are engaged in the activities. Each of them has prepared a two-month plan of interesting creative and educational events.

Among them are themed open lessons, research and practice conferences, training workshops, creative competitions, intellectual contests, quizzes, dramatic readings, exhibitions to name but a few. The numerous events, featuring some ten foreign languages, offer their participants engaging learning experiences, practical recommendations and helpful tips on language teaching methods, and allow them to share expertise and useful information, and to define new goals.

Besides, the D. Azadi Turkmen Institute of World Languages is offering open lessons to teachers of the capital’s schools specializing in foreign languages.

The inter-university activities will culminate in a big joint concert in December celebrating the 25th anniversary of the country’s neutrality. During the winter holidays, the Institute of World Languages will run a seminar on improving foreign language teaching methods at the engineering universities, given their areas of specialization.

The Strategy for Improving Foreign Language Teaching and its Action Plan were approved on December 22, 2017, initiating renewed massive efforts in the education sector. The second stage of the Strategy (consisting of three stages) is now nearing completion.

The first stage of implementation in 2018 included the study of the world’s best practices in foreign language teaching methodology, the improvement of the national standards, academic curricula, language training programs at all levels. The second stage (2019-2020) focused on the efforts undertaken to enhance the training of teachers and their professional development, and to upgrade teaching and educational resources in this field. The final, third stage (2021-2024) envisages the creation of a continuous, coherent and interconnected system of foreign language teaching in Turkmenistan.
