World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year by people around the world on June 14. It was established in May 2005 during the 58th World Health Assembly in Geneva. It is celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner on June 14, 1868. Landsteiner was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system.

Today, blood donation is a completely harmless and safe procedure. For a healthy person, this procedure is even useful. In donor's body, the level of adaptive reactions increases, hematopoiesis and immunity are boosted, and the organs involved in the utilization of blood cells are relieved.

In Turkmenistan, as well as in other countries, for 2021, the World Blood Donor Day slogan is “Give blood and keep the world beating”.

The specific objectives of this year’s campaign are to promote the community values of blood donation in enhancing community solidarity and social cohesion and thank blood donors in the world and create wider public awareness of the need for regular, unpaid blood donation.

The health care system in Turkmenistan is well structured. The Blood Centre of Turkmenistan is the most important unit of the system. It belongs to the Office of the Centers for Infectious Diseases of the Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan. The Center is in charge for blood collection, preparation, transfusion, and preparation of sera.

The center registers donors with different blood groups, ensures medical examination of donors. Providing medical institutions with blood and blood components, the center constantly stores blood.

Saving people's life is not an easy task, but without blood supplies, this task is often impossible. Donors are truly irreplaceable. These are conscientious people who stand up for the lives of others, ready to develop social consciousness by their example.
