FIRST YOUTH CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE TOOK PLACE IN TURKMENISTAN

The UN representation in Turkmenistan together with the British Embassy in Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and other national partners held the first in the country Youth Conference on Climate Change. The event was organized in the hybrid format on the eve of the 26th UN Climate Charge Conference (COP26) and Climate Charge Conference of Youth (COY16), which will be held in Glasgow (Great Britain).

First of its kind conference in Turkmenistan is intended to ensure a youth’s platform for the discussion of the climate change problem, development of activities and solutions on the combating climate change, as well as training the young leaders in the field of climate through development of their capacity. Its goal is also to extend the Final summary of initiatives of the Turkmen youth for abovesaid events – COY16 и COP26.

This present time throughout the world lives the largest generation of young people in the history of mankind– 1,8 billion. The young people spearhead a movement on the combating climate change, implementing the projects on mitigation and adaptation, proposing the innovative solutions, promoting the social progress and inspiring the positive changes, both in urban and rural conditions.

Among the participants of the event are the representatives of youth from different regions of the country, UN agencies, diplomatic missions, accredited in Turkmenistan, students of the higher educational institutions of the country and young activists.

«The youth conference, focused on the climate issues, confirms the necessity of solving the emerging problems related to climate change through involving, alongside the government and UN, of wider community of concerned parties, namely youth. This new generation has an increased awareness of the social and ecological issues, energy and knowledge, which lead to CO2 emission reduction and to future resistant to climate change», – stressed in his speech the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko.

In addition to the plenary meeting, within the framework of the conference the thematic sessions were held, in the course of which each group of young delegates developed its official positions for the final statement of the Turkmen youth.

In the course of conference the proposals were made on an expansion of youth participation in the international forums, their capacity to interact with countries, recommendation on involvement of the young generation to the national processes of the decision making on issues of the combating climate change in Turkmenistan, emerging their role in the sustainable rehabilitation.
