On May 26, 2026, a meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

During the conversation, the parties discussed key areas for further strengthening the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations, as well as pressing issues on the international and regional agenda.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan conveyed warm greetings and best wishes to the UN Secretary-General on behalf of the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedow, and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.

Special attention was paid to the UN General Assembly resolution adopted on May 20, 2026, entitled “The role and importance of a policy of neutrality in maintaining and strengthening international peace, security and sustainable development”. The Turkmen side emphasized the significance of this document as confirmation of the international recognition of the policy of neutrality as an effective instrument for strengthening confidence and preventing conflicts. Speaking about the resolution, the Secretary-General noted that the document is highly timely in light of current realities and thanked Turkmenistan for its leadership in this process.

A separate part of the talks focused on Turkmenistan’s initiative to establish a University of Peace and Neutrality. The parties noted that the creation of such an educational institution under the auspices of the United Nations would provide a strong impetus for promoting the values of permanent neutrality among young people and strengthening global dialogue based on the principles of mutual respect.

During the meeting, Turkmenistan reaffirmed its commitment to further advancing the constructive initiatives of the head of state aimed at strengthening international peace and security. Particular attention was paid to Turkmen proposals such as the development of a Global Security Strategy, the establishment of a Mediation Chamber for Peace under the auspices of the United Nations, and the intensification of preventive diplomacy.

The parties highly appreciated the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and emphasized the importance of further strengthening cooperation in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their mutual commitment to further strengthening the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations in the interests of peace, sustainable development, and international cooperation.
