MAN-MADE RESERVOIR STORES FIRST BILLION CUBIC METERS OF WATER!

The country’s largest man-made reservoir named ‘15 Years of Independence of Turkmenistan’ in the south-east of Lebap Velayat is being filled rapidly as winter started. As a TDH correspondent was informed, the reservoir is now receiving water from the Amudarya River (250-260 cubic meters per second). 1.2 billion cubic meters of water is now stored in the artificial lake.
Water from the Amudarya River is being received through a canal 40 km long and 120 m wide. Before the spring-summer vegetation season starts, the reservoir will collect over 2 billion cubic meters of water from the Amudarya River. This will ensure significant quantities of water to support and satisfy increasing needs of irrigated farming in Turkmenistan, given new farmlands.
The artificial reservoir operates smoothly and regulates the river flow, ensuring the reliable supply of water from the Amudarya River to Mary, Akhal and Balkan Velayats through the Garagum River. Throughout the year, the required quantities of purified and clarified water are continuously supplied to meet seasonal demand.
The second phase of the 15 Years of Independence of Turkmenistan Water Reservoir Project is now being successfully implemented in Zeid in compliance with the new target set by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for the domestic water industry. Once the project is over, the artificial lake will have a storage capacity of over 3.5 billion cubic meters of water from the Amudarya River.
