According to former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Bryza in his interview to the Azerbaijani website Report, the agreement between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan on the joint development of the Dostluk oil and gas field in the Caspian Sea allowed exporting Turkmen gas to the West.

According to Matthew Bryza, Azerbaijan is interested in importing gas from Turkmenistan for domestic consumption, especially for its growing petrochemical industry, and Turkey has expressed the interest in purchasing natural gas from Turkmenistan for 30 years.

Commenting on the results of the last International Oil and Gas Forum of Turkmenistan, Mr. Bryza underlined that the forum was an important historic step of the government of Turkmenistan in opening its economy to investors from the Greater Caspian Sea region and beyond.

He paid particular attention to the speech of President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) Rovnag Abdullayev at the forum. According to Matthew Bryza, the meeting of Mr. Abdullayev with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Deputy Chairman of the Turkmengaz State Concern Guvanch Agajanov focused on the common plans to promote the export of Turkmen natural gas to the West.

“My colleagues in the US government and I welcome such inter-Caspian cooperation,” the American diplomat said.
